Troy Aikman’s flub on ‘Monday Night Football’ had fans on social media wanting to grab earmuffs to cover their ears.
In Green Bay’s 34-0 demolition of the depleted New Orleans Saints, Aikman and Joe Buck discussed how the Packers built their team to compete in the NFC North. As the duo were heaping praise onto the players and the coaching staff, Aikman attempted to give credit to Green Bay general manager Brian Gutekunst.
However, the former Dallas Cowboys star had difficulty pronouncing Gutekunst’s name, often putting emphasis on the wrong part. This did not sit well with Packers fans, who made their displeasure with Aikman’s attempts known on social media.
“Does Troy Aikman know its ‘Guta-Koontz,’ not ‘Guta-Kuntz.’ Jesus Troy,” one fan wrote in response. Another fan wrote: “Seriously why can’t Troy Aikman say our GM’s last name.”
With Aikman having difficulty pronouncing Gutekunst’s name, other viewers began pondering how to properly say the name for the former quarterback’s sake. “Is it Gute-KUNST or Gute-KOONST? Asking for Troy Aikman,” a fan wrote in response to Aikman’s flub.
Fans seemingly had enough of the 58-year-old’s commentary, with a handful proposing that Aikman stop talking for the rest of the game. “Troy Aikman laughing is ear pollution,” a fan said, with another adding: “Can Troy Aikman stop talking?”
For reference, “Gutekunst” is a southern German last name, though its pronunciation varies. Because of how the name and its spelling has change throughout the years, some prefer to pronounce it as “Goodykoontz,” which makes it phonetically similar to the German pronunciation “Goode-Koonsht.”
However, in the Packers general manager’s introductory press conference, the 51-year-old shared just how to properly pronounce his seemingly difficult last name. The general manager explained that his last name is pronounced “Goo-tuh-kunst,” per Packers Wire.
Along with Aikman’s botched pronunciation of Gutekunst taking hold on social media, fans also noticed how irate Saints interim coach Darren Rizzi was after officials made a mistake with the game clock. Late in the second quarter, New Orleans quarterback Spencer Rattler connected with Kevin Austin to advance the ball to Green Bay’s 34-yard line.
However, the ball was fumbled out of bounds earlier in the play, with the clock still ticking away. Upon seeing the time wasted, Rizzi angrily threw off his headset and confronted officials regarding the play.
The Saints were forced to use a timeout with just 15 seconds remaining, though the drive ended without too many issues after Rattler was sacked and failed to complete two passes. New Orleans finished the half with 0 points and 100 yards of total offense.
With the win, the Packers improved to 11-4 and secured a playoff spot. Meanwhile, the Saints are left pondering which direction the franchise will go in 2025.
