Sydney Sweeney has been the subject of controversy after she appeared in an American Eagle ad promoting her ‘good jeans’ and now her brother has commented on the drama
Sydney Sweeney’s brother is leaning into his “good jeans.”
The Euphoria star has been the center of a controversy regarding her American Eagle ad with the tagline, “Sydney Sweeney has good jeans.” Many critics interpreted the wordplay on “jeans” and “genes” as promoting Sydney’s blonde hair and blue eyes as the beauty standard.
Others have taken it even farther, believing the alleged blonde hair and blue eyes to be a nod to eugenics, a discredited ideology focused on selective breeding and human superiority known for being prominent in Nazi ideology. Some on the internet even dubbed Sydney’s German Shepard a “Nazi dog” to justify the backlash.
Sydney’s brother, Trent, commented on the controversy on Thursday, August 7. He shared a photo on his Instagram Story of a certificate that announced his promotion to Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force.
He captioned the photo, “It’s them good jeans,” an obvious play on the ad’s tagline.
After the backlash, American Eagle shared a statement on Instagram. “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans is and always was about the jeans,” they wrote.
“Her jeans. Her story,” it continued, “We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”
But many internet users pointed to an accompanying video to the ad that shows Sydney buttoning up her jeans as she says, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color…my genes are blue.”
People took to social media to share their outrage of the video specifically. “The most nazi part of the Sydney Sweeney [ad] for me was the use of the word offspring,” one person wrote. ”Jeans (Genes) are past down from parent to offspring’ ‘My jeans (genes) are blue’ ‘Sydney Sweeney has great jeans (genes)’ Nothing is ever a coincidence, this is eugenics.”
Others have come to Sydney’s defense, even Donald Trump. The current president wrote on Truth Social, “Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the ‘HOTTEST’ ad out there.”
“Its for American Eagle, and the jeans are ‘flying off the shelves.’ Go get em, Sydney!” he continued. “On the other side of the ledger, Jaguar did a stupid, and seriously WOKE advertisement, THAT IS A TOTAL DISASTER!”
