NFL broadcasters Joe Buck and Troy Aikman found themselves in an awkward spot Sunday night after Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey missed a rare field goal attempt against the Houston Texans.

Moments before the miss, the duo had all but guaranteed Aubrey would make the 40-yard kick, referencing his perfect record at AT&T Stadium. The scene for the kick developed late in the first half, with the Cowboys trailing 17-10.

Buck added color to his commentary by recounting a conversation with Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy, who praised Aubrey’s leg reliability. Aikman, clearly confident in the kicker’s abilities, added, “This is three points in the pocket,” as the broadcast displayed a graphic showing Aubrey’s perfect 34-for-34 field goal record at AT&T Stadium.

Aubrey’s 40-yard attempt rattled off the right upright with just 56 seconds left in the half. Buck immediately addressed the situation by joking, “That is a full network jinx. I’m not taking the fall for this. It was everybody.” Aikman followed with, “I’m not either,” as the two tried to laugh off the unexpected miss.

The timing of the miss couldn’t have been worse for Aubrey, who sunk a 53-yard attempt to cut the team’s deficit to seven points earlier in the quarter. While the Cowboys’ kicker missed the attempt, he’s been reliable all season with a 91.7 field goal percentage, including a perfect 7-for-7 from 40-49 yards and 9-of-10 from beyond 50 yards.

As the commentary team denied the so-called “announcer jinx,” NFL fans voiced differently online. An NFL fan on X wrote, “Joe Buck jinxed Cowboys Brandon Aubrey, who was over 40 FG without a miss at home. Missed his first one tonight.”

Another fan wrote, “Great job, Buck! That miss is on you! HUGE announcer jinx,” to which another replied, “Announcer jinx, and I knew it would happen.” Aubrey remains one of the NFL’s most consistent kickers, with a perfect field goal record this season and ranking 11th in total points with 79.

The second-year kicker finished his rookie season with 157 points and a 94.7 completion percentage, including 10-10 on kicks 50 yards or further. He missed two field goals in the entire year, both in the last game of the season against the Washington Commanders on attempts between 30-39 yards.

Dallas struggled offensively in the game and lost to the Texans 34-10. The Cowboys’ sole touchdown occurred in the second quarter when backup quarterback Cooper Rush connected with wide receiver KaVontae Turpin on a 64-yard pass.

Aubrey added the extra point, contributing to Dallas’s limited scoring. It was the last time the team would score any points for the remainder of the game, as Houston scored three more times, including a field goal, fumble recovery, and a rushing touchdown in the final minutes by Joe Mixon, who scored three times in the game.
