Jared Goff will now hope to equal a record set by Terry Bradshaw in becoming one of just three starting quarterbacks to throw five interceptions in a game and going on to win the Super Bowl that same season.
The Detroit Lions quarterback put in one of the worst performances of his career, throwing five picks through the first three-quarters of the game and giving his team little chance to compete against the Houston Texans – who ran out to a 23-7 lead at the half.
Goff improved in the fourth quarter though, throwing a touchdown to Amon Ra St. Brown while leading two more impressive drives for field goals to pull off an unlikely comeback – keeping themselves in first place in the NFC and remaining the favorites to make it to the Super Bowl.

The Lions starting quarterback has put in a solid season up until the Texans game, while being in the MVP conversation before throwing five interceptions – relying on his defense and running game that had continued to perform well in the win on Sunday Night Football.
While Detroit may not have any standout superstars on the roster, they’re looking like a well-rounded team and the best in the NFC – only being defeated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers so far.
And should they go on to actually win the Super Bowl this year, Goff would be only one of three quarterbacks in NFL history to throw five picks and win the Lombardi Trophy that same season. Bradshaw was the first to do so in 1979, when he threw five interceptions against the San Diego Chargers before winning the Super Bowl with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Incredibly, another quarterback managed the unlikely feat again the following season, when Oakland Raiders’ Jim Plunkett threw five picks against the Kansas City Chiefs and went on to win the Super Bowl that year. No quarterback has since gone on to win it all after throwing as many turnovers in one game in the same year.
The Lions and Goff have a favorable schedule coming up in the next few weeks, where they’ll hope to extend their lead atop of the NFC, ensuring that all of their playoff games will be at their home stadium, Ford Field and remaining strong favorites for the Super Bowl.
