The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have reinstated former head coach Jon Gruden to their Ring of Honor, reversing their 2021 decision to remove him following his controversial resignation from the Las Vegas Raiders.
The team announced the decision on Thursday, issuing a statement that acknowledged Gruden’s significant contributions to the franchise.
“Jon Gruden was initially inducted to the Buccaneers Ring of Honor based on his many accomplishments during his seven seasons as our head coach, and he remains a significant figure in the history of our franchise,” the team wrote in a message posted on social media. “Upon further reflection, we have decided to reinstate him into the Buccaneers Ring of Honor.”
Gruden, who coached the Buccaneers from 2002 to 2008, remains one of the most pivotal figures in the franchise’s history. In his first season with the team, he led Tampa Bay to its first-ever Super Bowl victory, defeating the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII.
However, the franchise removed him from the Ring of Honor in 2021 after leaked emails revealed that Gruden had used racist, homophobic, and misogynistic language over several years in correspondence with then-Washington executive Bruce Allen. The emails led to his resignation as head coach of the Raiders, and the Buccaneers quickly distanced themselves from him, stating at the time:
“While we acknowledge Jon Gruden’s contributions on the field, his actions go against our core values as an organization.”

What Led to Gruden’s Reinstatement?
The decision to reinstate Gruden comes after a renewed connection between him and the Glazer family, owners of the Buccaneers. According to a report shared by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the shift began last summer at a memorial for former Bucs defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin.
During the celebration of life, Monte’s son, Lane Kiffin, shared a story about his father’s deep belief in second chances. The message reportedly resonated with the Glazer family, sparking renewed discussions between them and Gruden.
As tensions thawed, Gruden was invited to a Buccaneers game last season, where he was seen sitting in the Glazers’ suite. The interaction seemed to pave the way for his reinstatement.
Gruden Responds to His Return to the Ring of Honor
Gruden, now 60, expressed gratitude for the decision, telling the Tampa Bay Times:
“All I can say is that it’s a great honor. And I’m very appreciative.”
While some fans may welcome the decision as a recognition of his football legacy, others may question whether enough time has passed to justify the reversal.
Regardless, the move marks a significant chapter in both Gruden’s history and the Buccaneers’ ongoing relationship with one of their most impactful coaches.
