Golf fans have called on the PGA Tour to allow Tiger Woods to compete in events on the circuit in a cart, giving him the chance to prolong his playing days.
During his remarkable career, Woods has announced himself as arguably the greatest golfer of all time, winning a record-equalling 82 PGA Tour titles as well as 15 major championships. In recent years, however, the Jupiter resident has been forced to move to a part-time schedule amid problems with injury.
In 2024, Woods played in just five events on the PGA Tour and one outside the four major championships, where he was forced to pull out during the second round of the Genesis Invitational due to illness.
Elsewhere, he played 72 holes just once, after making his only cut of the year at the Masters in April. The key problem over the past three years has been his right leg, after the golfing great was involved in a serious car accident on the outskirts of Los Angeles in February 2021.
There had been concerns that Woods would never play competitive golf again but defied the odds after returning at the Masters in 2022. Woods’ discomfort is clear to see when walking out on the golf course, but having turned 49 this week, things could soon become a little easier.
At 50, Woods will become eligible to compete on the PGA Tour Champions, where the senior circuit offers players the chance to compete whilst using a cart. As things stand, players are prohibited from this benefit when playing in regular PGA Tour events, which could well signal the end of their playing days on the sport’s leading circuit.
For the sake of Woods though, fans want to see this rule change. Taking to X, one golf fan tweeted: “The guy is a legend to the sport, completely changed the game and nobody will truly understand how much he grew the game before growing the game became a phrase for golf.
“Let the man have a cart, it would help him big time, too. We need him on Sunday fighting for the lead one last time.” A second then went on to add: “Id let him have a golf buggy now. Tiger has always pushed the boundaries in golf. Let him be the first & others will follow.”
The support for Woods continued, as a third tweeted: “The PGA Tour and majors should let him use a cart now.” Woods has never officially confirmed whether he will make the move to the Champions Tour, but fellow great Jack Nicklaus believes he will make the move one day.
I think Tiger will play the senior tour, Nicklaus told the Golf Channel earlier this year. “Hell be able to get in a cart, and hell absolutely kill everybody. Hes a talented guy, a great worker, got a great work ethic. Loves to play golf. I know hes concentrating on his son Charlie a lot right now, rightfully so. I think the father-son relationship is terrific, and Im happy for Tiger with that.
