Former NFL quarterback and ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky has told Caleb Williams what he must work on this offseason after another disappointing performance on Thursday Night Football.
Williams failed to lead his offense to score a touchdown in the loss to the Seattle Seahawks while throwing another brutal interception, struggling to get the best out of his array of wide receiving options. The number one overall draft pick entered the league seen as far and away the best option in the class, having incredible talents to make plays out of nothing.
And while Williams has been able to have countless highlight moments in his rookie season, his down-to-down consistencies have marred him – with Orlovsky believing him to have picked up some bad tendencies already in his first year with Chicago.
What Seattle Seahawks need to make NFL Playoffs after nervy win over Chicago Bears
Orlovsky tweeted: “One of my biggest concern with Calebs rookie season is it looks like coaches have coached his aggression away – hes far too cautious with ball for his arm talent. Next coach has to rebuild his mindset imo. See it, Trust it, Rip it.”
The Bears had fired their offensive coordinator who had begun the season in Shane Waldron, with fans believing him to be putting Williams in difficult situations in the early weeks of the season. But in recent weeks, his play has not improved, struggling to remain consistent while following an impressive performance up with a struggling outing.
Williams’ biggest criticism in college had been that he had too often looked to make plays out of structure, wanting to hold on to the ball for too long and scramble before launching it downfield. Already this season, Williams has found out that he won’t be able to do that in the NFL, with pass-rushers quickly getting to him in obvious passing situations.
The talented quarterback has already been told by Shannon Sharpe that he too must work on this, needing to get the ball out quicker in the NFL – taking seven sacks in the loss to the Seahawks while being at fault for most of them in the game.
Last week, Sharpe said: “I do think Caleb Williams holds on to the ball entirely too long. Clearly he’s not comfortable making the right decision than letting the football go on cue and on rhythm. I just think it’s pre-snap. He’s just got to get a better job of pre-snap. He’s got to do a better job of processing and letting the football go. Like I said, there were situations that he had receivers open, and for whatever reason, his eyes went elsewhere.
“He’s very good at playing off script, but that’s not how you want to try to make a living. Now, it’s nice to have that in your back pocket. You see guys like a Lamar Jackson. You see guys like a Patrick Mahomes. You see guys like Josh Allen be able to make plays off-script, but that’s not how you want to live.”
