Tyreek Hill sparked speculation about his future with the Miami Dolphins following a disappointing end to the 2024 season. After a 32-20 loss to the New York Jets eliminated Miami from playoff contention, Hill’s postgame remarks suggested he may be considering a departure.
“This is the first time I haven’t been in the playoffs,” Hill said, per Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald. “For me, I have to do what’s best for me and my family, whether that’s here or wherever that may be. I’m about to open up that door for myself. I’m opening the door. I’m out. It was great playing here, but at the end of the day, I have to do what’s best for my career. I’m too much of a competitor to just be out there.”
Head Coach Responds to Hill’s Comments
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel addressed Hill’s remarks but downplayed their significance, attributing them to the heat of the moment.
“I’m not going to put too much weight on secondhand postgame disappointment statements,” McDaniel told reporters, according to Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network. “We’ll see how the next couple of days progress in conversations with him.”
McDaniel added that emotions often run high after games, particularly in a season-ending loss. “It’s a little cloudy in the heat of the moment for multiple reasons,” McDaniel said, per Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN. “I know that clarity will be found.”

A Season of Unmet Expectations
Hill’s comments followed a loss that dropped the Dolphins to 8-9, leaving them short of the playoffs for the second consecutive year. Miami needed both a win over the Jets and a Broncos loss to the Chiefs to clinch a postseason berth. However, Denver dismantled a depleted Kansas City squad, winning 38-0, while Miami fell short against New York.
Hill, who battled a wrist injury throughout the season, finished the game on the sidelines, missing the fourth quarter. The star receiver tallied 81 receptions for 959 yards and six touchdowns in 17 games—a significant drop from his league-leading 1,799 receiving yards and 13 touchdown catches in 2023.
McDaniel clarified Hill’s absence late in the game, saying he was informed that Hill was unavailable just before a drive. “I was not informed that it was a new injury,” McDaniel explained. “Focus was on players on the field.”
Hill, however, suggested his benching was strategic, as the Dolphins’ playoff hopes dwindled. “The coach kind of pulled me out… Just one of those situations where you look up at the scoreboard, see the Chiefs are down, and it’s like, ‘OK,’” Hill said, according to Kelly.
Reevaluating His Career
Reflecting on the season, Hill expressed frustration and a desire to reassess his career trajectory. “There are a lot of things I need to reassess about my career,” Hill said. “I need to figure out what I need to do to get better as a player so I can continue reaching that 1,000-yard mark.”
Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, plans to discuss the comments with his client before addressing them publicly. “That will be an internal discussion I have with Tyreek,” Rosenhaus said, per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.
Hill’s Future with Miami
Despite the uncertainty, Hill remains under contract with Miami through the 2026 season, having signed a three-year extension in August. The 30-year-old wideout had previously expressed a desire to retire as a Dolphin, saying so in May 2024.
Hill joined the Dolphins in 2022 following a blockbuster trade from the Kansas City Chiefs, where he spent his first six seasons and won a Super Bowl. Known for his explosive playmaking ability, Hill has been a consistent Pro Bowl selection throughout his career. However, this season marked the first time he was not named to the roster in his nine-year NFL tenure.
Injuries Take a Toll on Dolphins
Miami’s 2024 campaign was marred by injuries, particularly at quarterback. Tua Tagovailoa missed four games in the first half of the season due to a concussion and was sidelined for the final two weeks with a hip issue. The team’s struggles underlined Hill’s competitive frustrations, as the Dolphins failed to meet expectations despite his efforts.
As Hill contemplates his future, Miami faces significant questions about its roster and long-term plans. Whether Hill’s comments signal the beginning of an exit or simply reflect postgame frustration, the Do
