Sabrina Carpenter was not expecting “Espresso” to percolate the way it did.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published on Dec. 30, the “Please Please Please” singer spoke about how she was unsure anyone would connect with the song, which was the most-streamed song on Spotify in 2024 with over 1.6 billion streams.

Carpenter, 25, who partnered with Dunkin’ Donuts for her Sabrina’s Brown Sugar Shakin’ Espresso drink, said it was “kismet the way that worked out” with the pop song becoming how popular it is.

When Carpenter released the song in April, she was unsure if it would “connect” due to its timing. “I remember deciding to put this song out in the beginning of summer and thinking espresso, coffee is kind of more of a fall beverage,” she explained.

“I really didn’t know if it would connect, but the sentiment and the sound of the song and the confidence that it kind of just carries along with it was something that I really believed in.”

“So I had literally no idea that anyone would like it, but I liked it, and that was kind of all that mattered to me in that moment, and something I try to remember over and over again,” she added.

“Espresso” appears on Carpenter’s acclaimed album Short n’ Sweet, which garnered the pop star six 2025 Grammy nominations, including record of the year and best pop solo performance nods for “Espresso.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Carpenter spoke about how “addictive” the song is.

“I think that’s the whole point of it. It’s like somewhat addictive. It’s really all kismet the way that worked out,” she mused. “I didn’t write it with that in mind. So I’m really happy to hear that. But thank you for listening so many times, even if you weren’t aware of it.”

She told The Guardian in August that she wrote “Espresso” as a “manifestation tactic” because “no one liked me romantically at that point — no one was obsessed with me.”

“I didn’t have anyone I was even talking to,” Carpenter said at the time, adding that she’s “always been a bit delusional, in that sense.”
