Rory Culkin has revealed the extreme lengths he went to while filming horror movie Scream 4, admitting he tormented himself on set and even stalked his co-stars in order to get into character.
Released fourteen years ago, Scream 4 marked the final entry in the franchise directed by horror legend Wes Craven. The 2011 slasher revived familiar faces like Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, while adding fresh blood including Culkin, Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, and Alison Brie.
In a new book, Your Favorite Scary Movie: How the Scream Films Rewrote the Rules of Horror by Ashley Cullins, Culkins chilling behind-the-scenes preparation has come to light. The actor, who played one of the films killers, admitted he pushed himself to extremes while filming.
He told Us Weekly, I was kind of torturing myself a little bit, thinking thats what you need to do to get a good performance. I was kind of starving myself and listening to f-ed-up music.
“In my trailer, when they would call me to set or give me a five-minute warning, I would start slapping myself. I wanted to feel something weird. I remember just wanting to feel beaten, a little bit.
Culkin explained that at the height of this self-imposed torment, he even avoided his fellow cast. I remember kinda disappearing into the woods by myself and using it as an opportunity to stalk them, look at them through the woods. They couldnt see me because I was far enough away and I put myself in the shoes of the killer, which is creepy to say.
He added that although he didnt wear the Ghostface mask in the film, he requested one for rehearsals. I would also put on that mask and go walking down the side of the highway, he revealed.
The 2011 movie saw Sidney Prescott return to Woodsboro years after her earlier battles with the masked killer, only for the town to once again descend into bloodshed.
Reflecting on his method, Culkin said, I wanted to be human and explore, why am I crazy? Why am I killing people? You dont see it in the film, but in my mind, I was struggling. Every time I would kill someone, I would cry and feel bad about it. I felt I hadnt seen that in a Scream movie, a remorseful killer thats what I was going for.
Scream, which was released in 1996, focused on Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) as she faced off against numerous killers hiding their identity behind the infamous Ghostface persona.
In the film, she received help from fellow OG Scream characters Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and Dewey Riley (David Arquette), which led to the creation of three sequels in 1997, 2000 and 2011.
