The sixth season of Virgin River introduced a significant plot twist for Mel Monroe – her long-lost biological father, Everett Reid.
However, fans have criticized the storyline as “rushed” and “awkward.” At the end of the fifth season, Mel found out that the man she thought was her biological father wasn’t related to her at all. Instead, she discovered that her mother had an affair and her real father had been living in Virgin River all this time.
The sixth season focuses on Mel and Everett trying to build a father-daughter relationship while she also deals with how this revelation impacts her relationship with Doc, who has been like a father to her since she arrived in Virgin River. Despite the emotional impact of the discovery, fans believe the storyline was hurried along too quickly.
For a show that extended Charmaine’s pregnancy over five seasons, the quick progression of Mel and Everett’s relationship left many viewers feeling frustrated.
Instead of taking time to digest the shocking news, Mel seemed to accept the news after just one conversation with her sister and found Everett within a single episode. While the timeline of the show allows for several months between seasons five and six, the new season began with Mel already determined to make Everett a significant part of her life.
She eventually started calling him “Dad” and even went as far as asking him – and uninviting Doc – to walk her down the aisle, a decision that sparked mixed reactions among fans.
Viewers have taken to Reddit to express their dissatisfaction with the handling of a storyline. One fan posted, “I just started season 6. While I’m enjoying the “newfound biological father” for Mel, she’s pushing too hard to include him. I know this is the show making the storyline, but it makes me so sad for Doc. He was heartbroken when she told him about her “dad.” Then playing a song, walking her down the aisle, it made me uncomfortable.”
This sparked a flurry of responses from fans, many of whom focused on Doc’s predicament. One fan replied, “I think they’re pushing the narrative a little bit too hard with this new dad in my eyes doc had always been there so why was he suddenly booted because you share blood with this man that you don’t even know.”
Another viewer commented, “But how long have Mel and Doc known each other? 14 months? I think their super close “bond” and father daughter relationship is ridiculous.”
Yet another fan expressed outrage at the situation, deeming the storyline unrealistic and stating, “It is so awkward. And she didn’t seem remotely upset that the man she thought was her biological father, wasn’t. Joey was more upset than she was – Mel was just like, cool – let’s go find my new dad!”.
They added, “No grieving at all, and honestly, don’t you think either sister would be a little disappointed in their mom for cheating on their dad and getting pregnant?”
