Meyers Leonard, a former NBA center who played for the Portland Trail Blazers, Miami Heat, and Milwaukee Bucks, has officially announced his retirement from professional basketball. The 7-footer, best known for his physical presence on the court and his ability to stretch the floor as a three-point shooter, made the announcement in a unique and heartfelt way—through an original country song shared on his Instagram.
Selected 11th overall in the 2012 NBA Draft by Portland, Leonard spent nearly a decade in the league, playing key roles for multiple teams. He was part of the Trail Blazers’ core for seven seasons, helping the team reach the playoffs multiple times, before being traded to the Miami Heat in 2019.
With the Heat, Leonard experienced the peak of his career, starting in the NBA Finals during the 2020 bubble season. His journey later took him to Milwaukee, where he played in a limited role before deciding to step away from the game.
In his emotional farewell message, Leonard reflected on the immense impact basketball has had on his life. He spoke about how the sport provided financial stability for his family, allowing them opportunities they never could have imagined. He also credited basketball for introducing him to lifelong friendships and invaluable life experiences.

Despite his deep love for the game and his desire to continue playing, Leonard admitted that physical limitations ultimately led to his decision to retire.
Injuries plagued the latter part of his career, making it increasingly difficult for him to compete at the highest level. Rather than prolong the inevitable, he made the tough choice to step away from the court on his own terms.
Expressing his gratitude, Leonard thanked his coaches, teammates, fans, and everyone who supported him throughout his career.
He acknowledged the highs and lows of his NBA journey but emphasized that he has no regrets. Looking ahead, he is excited to embrace family life, spend more time with his loved ones, and explore new ventures beyond basketball.
As he transitions into the next chapter of his life, Leonard hinted at potential future endeavors in business, media, and philanthropy.
Whether through personal projects, community outreach, or continuing his love for country music, he is eager to make a positive impact off the court.
With his retirement announcement, Meyers Leonard leaves behind a legacy of resilience, hard work, and perseverance. While his time in the NBA has come to an end, his next adventure is just beginning.
