The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox has dropped a number of bombshells on Amanda’s imprisonment involving the murder of Meredith Kercher

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox is now streaming on Hulu and the true crime drama gives a deeper look into the case than ever before.

The new series, which has been produced by Amanda herself, reveals not only new bombshells but a look into details of the case that have only been briefly glanced over in the past. Many details surrounding her controversial 53-hour interrogation, time in prison and trial have come to light.

Additionally, never-before-seen details about meeting up with her prosecutor years later have been introduced. Amanda has teased the new details to People, stating, “I mean, I thought I knew a good amount, and it wasn’t even close to the twists and turns that happened throughout those years. It’s new information that the public does not know  especially in that last episode.”

1. Amanda became ‘hysterical’ when the police brought her back to the crime scene

Ahead of her arrest, Amanda was brought back to the crime scene by Italian police, which she claimed was a traumatizing experience.

The police told her they needed to identify the knife that was used to murder Meredith, but in actuality, they wanted to see how she would react returning to the scene of the crime.

This scene is depicted in the miniseries. Grace Van Patten portrays a light-hearted Amanda who seems to mask her distress with humor as she re-enters the home.

The tone quickly shifts, however, and Amanda becomes emotionally disturbed as police begin showing her knives.

She then begins having a panic attack. She is sat at the table where she begins hitting her head with her hands as she cries.

According to the real-life Amanda, this is exactly how the event went down.

She spoke on the moment during the 2016 Netflix documentary simply titled Amanda Knox.

“It hit me all at once and I became hysterical,” Knox explained of the moment in the documentary.

Her prosecutor, Giuliano Mignini, responded the same way that the police did in the miniseries.

“Undoubtedly I started to suspect Amanda,” he said of that moment in the documentary.

2. Language barrier over three-word text lead Amanda’s arrest

Amanda Knox underwent 53 hours of questioning by police after Meredith was murdered. When trying to pin down Amanda’s alibi, the police focused on one text that Amanda sent to her boss Patrick Lumumba, which read, “see you later.” The police reportedly interpreted this text to mean that Amanda was setting up plans to see Patrick later that evening.

Meanwhile, as portrayed in the series, Amanda explained it was just an American colloquialism and that she spent the entire evening with her love interest Raffaele Sollecito. However, police reportedly believed they caught Amanda in a lie and this is when Amanda claims the more aggressive questioning began.

“I was hit on the back of the head, I was yelled at. Police were coming in and out of the room telling me that I was a liar, Amanda said on an episode of Nightline. It was chaos. It was utter chaos.”

“The police told me that I had amnesia, and that I better remember the truth,” she said. “And so what they were forcing me to consider was that my memories that I had spent the night with Raffaele were wrong and that I needed to re-scramble my brain around in order to bring out the truth.”

She then changed her testimony to say she did see Patrick Lumumba later that evening at the crime scene where Meredith was murder. Hours later, she claims attempted to have police strike the testimony but was refused.

This was all portrayed in the Hulu series.

3. Amanda was falsely told she had HIV and had a list of her partners leaked to press

While in prison, Amanda was told she tested positive for HIV and was encouraged to write a list of her sexual partners. She wrote the list in her diary.

She then returned to her prison cell to find the furniture thrown around and her diary was missing. Her diary was given to the press who broadcast the list of her sexual history.

“I don’t know where I could have gotten HIV from,” the entry read. “Here is the list of people I’ve had sex with in general.”

A list of seven men was included, with her boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, who was also imprisoned for her roommate Meredith Kercher’s murder, as the last name on the list.

The journal entry resurfaced ahead of the miniseries.

Knox took to on X July 15 to respond, writing, “After years of being vilified as a deviant sex monster, I couldnt help but internalize some of that shame, despite the fact that I knew there was nothing wrong with my sexuality (which was actually quite vanilla).”

However, she faced some backlash. “Sleeping with 7 guys before the age of 19 is like so vanilla,” one user wrote.

“Yes, I slept with 7 people by age 20. (3 were serious boyfriends; 1 was Raffaele.),” she replied in a second message on X July 15.

“This was made public after police lied to me that I had HIV, then told me to write a list of my partners, then confiscated my diary and leaked it to the media. ‘I don’t want to die,’ I wrote,” she added.

Once the entry was leaked, she was told the test result was a false positive. However, the damage was already done and the journal entry helped play into the Foxy Noxy image the media had been painting of her.

4. Amanda contemplated suicide while in prison

Amanda has a dark monologue in the miniseries that occurred after her 2009 conviction. In the monologue, she discussed the ways other inmates have taken their lives.

In one moment, she picks up a shard of glass that fell from a mirror by the showers. She contemplates cutting herself and reasons to herself that the room is so steamy that the guards wouldn’t notice. However, she ultimately decides not to.

According to the real-life Amanda, this is something she contemplated during her time in prison.

Suddenly I found myself tossed into this dark place, she revealed in the 2016 Netflix documentary Amanda Knox. I thought about suicide. I thought about all the ways I could do it. Me not coming home again until I am in my 50s, until members of my family have died. I was poisoned.

She elaborated on the reasoning behind her suicidal thoughts on the Infertile AF podcast in 2022.

“The loneliness of realizing that I was not gonna share my life with a man I loved and I was not going to have children deeply, deeply impacted me, she said. And I tried to think, If thats not true anymore, how do I make my life worth living?’

5. Amanda visited the prosecutor who tried to get her sentenced to life years later

Even though her prosecutor, Giuliano Mignini, tried to get that conviction to stick, Amanda begun exchanging letters with him years later. The exchange ultimately resulted in a friendship and saw Amanda traveling to Italy in an attempt to understand his perspective.

They had a secret meeting in June 2022, and now details on that are being unveiled for the first time in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox.

This in-person exchange is built up throughout the entire eight-episode miniseries. The first episode starts with Amanda hiding in a car as she arrives in Italy with her mom, her husband and their daughter.

The year is 2022, and years later, her mom is concerned that it’s still a trap to get Amanda thrown back in jail.

The moments leading up to the discussion unfold throughout the series with the last episode being entirely focused on their exchange.

During the exchange depicted in the series, the two go back and forth on whether she was at the crime scene.

“You placed me at the scene of the crime. You talked about how I tortured and taunted Meredith,” Amanda says. While Giuliano said his “hyopthesis” was based on “investigative decisions” made at the time, which he still believed to that day, Amanda insists it wasn’t true.

An tearful Amanda then asks, “Why didnt you see me when you looked at your daughters? You often said that when you looked at your daughters, you saw poor Meredith. That she couldve been them. But I was just a girl too. I was just a young girl too.”

She then asks why he “came after her,” to which he responds, “Because I didn’t know you then as I know you now.”

While he says he would decline the case now, ultimately, he says he stands by the decision he made at the time based on the information he had.

In Italian, he states, “I confirm the position I took as prosecutor. I decided on the basis of the acts. In life you, make mistakes. And I could have been wrong about some things. It is also true there’s the judicial truth and there’s the real truth. We can only do our best to ensure the two truths coincide.”

Their interaction is interrupted by Amanda’s baby, Eureeka, crying. Giuliano says, “Eureeka is beautiful. A gift from the heavens.” She’s transformed you, you know. Motherhood will do that” to which Amanda responds, “No it hasn’t transformed me, actually. Who you see is who I’ve always been.”

When she met back up with her mom, her mom asked if he would put out a statement or if he apologized. Amanda then responded that he wouldn’t which caused her mom to exclaim it was all “for nothing.”

Amanda also addressed this encounter in her second memoir Free: My Search For Meaning which was published in 2025.

“I never set out to forgive him,” she said of the reason why she reached out to Giuliano.

“I think that’s an important point to make as I’m not a person whose faith, for example, compels them to forgive. That was not my goal. My goal was to understand him… there was this deep curiosity in me to try to understand this person who decided that I was a dangerous person, who deserved to spend the most years of my life in prison.”
