Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott hasn’t been to an NFC Championship yet in his nine-year NFL career, let alone a Super Bowl. He’ll do whatever he can to help his team get there.

Last August, Prescott signed a record-setting four-year, $240 million contract extension, making him the highest-paid player in NFL history on an average annual value basis.

But now that he’s gotten his payday, Prescott is doing what he can to give the Cowboys some financial flexibility to work around his deal.

On Tuesday, the Cowboys restructured wide receiver CeeDee Lamb’s contract to create an additional $20 million in salary cap space. They wasted no time doing the same with Prescott, creating even more financial wiggle room this time around.

The Cowboys are reportedly opening up $36.6 million in salary cap space by converting $45.5 million of Prescott’s 2025 salary into signing bonuses. ESPN’s Todd Archer reported the news of the restructuring on X (formerly Twitter).

Of course, the Cowboys still have to pay Prescott the full $52.9 million he’s owed for 2025. Plus, his cap hit jumps to $76.5 million in 2026, then $70.8 million in 2027.

The Cowboys can also create more cap space for 2025 if and when they sign defensive end Micah Parsons to a long-term extension. They can backload his deal and open up some of the $24 million he’s scheduled to make on his fifth-year option, though that will eventually put strain on the payroll in the contract’s latter years.

Dallas knew when they gave Prescott his extension that it would create some financial hardships eventually. But they’re not worried about anything beyond the 2025 season right now, and Wednesday’s decision only reinforces that notion.

Now, owner/general manager Jerry Jones has to put these savings to good use in free agency to give the Cowboys the best possible shot at a Super Bowl run in 2025.
