A new report from The Athletic sheds light on the tumultuous final season of Bill Belichick’s storied tenure as head coach of the New England Patriots. According to team sources, Belichick reportedly “withdrew” from his staff during the 2023-24 season, cutting off communication with those he believed were not fully loyal to him.
Belichick, known for his reserved and disciplined nature, became even more insular as the Patriots struggled through a dismal 4–13 campaign. Chad Graff of The Athletic reported, “Belichick further withdrew during the season amid his team’s struggles, according to team sources with knowledge of the situation. He stopped talking altogether to multiple members of his already small coaching staff, cutting off communication with anyone perceived to be less than entirely loyal to him.”
The Fallout of Isolation
This behavior reportedly contributed to the abrupt end of Belichick’s 24-year tenure with the Patriots. While Belichick, team owner Robert Kraft, and defensive assistant Jerod Mayo had a succession plan in place, Belichick’s departure came a year earlier than anticipated. The lack of mentorship between Belichick and Mayo left the latter unprepared for the head coaching role, forcing Kraft to accelerate the transition.
Mayo, who was considered a rising coaching star, struggled to stabilize the team during his two seasons at the helm, leading to another 4–13 record in 2024-25. Kraft ultimately dismissed Mayo this past Sunday, marking a second consecutive year of organizational upheaval.
“The mentorship that was supposed to occur between Belichick and Mayo never happened,” the report states, leaving the franchise scrambling to rebuild in the aftermath of back-to-back disappointing seasons.

The Patriots’ Next Steps
With Mayo out, the Patriots are now searching for their next head coach. Among the top candidates reportedly under consideration are former Patriots linebacker and current Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel, as well as Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who has garnered significant attention for his innovative play-calling.
Despite the recent turmoil, there is a silver lining: the team’s rookie quarterback, Drake Maye, is viewed as a potential franchise cornerstone. The former UNC standout had a promising debut season, and his presence is expected to attract high-profile coaching candidates eager to work with a rising star under center.
Belichick’s Next Chapter
Meanwhile, Belichick has moved on to a new challenge, taking the reins as the head coach of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels football program. This move marks a significant shift in his career trajectory, as he transitions from the professional ranks to college football. Belichick’s notoriously demanding and no-nonsense demeanor will now be put to the test in a setting where player development and recruitment play a critical role.

Belichick’s final years with the Patriots have undoubtedly complicated his legacy. While his six Super Bowl championships and two-decade reign of dominance in New England cement him as one of the greatest coaches in NFL history, his inability to adapt during the team’s recent struggles and his fractured relationships with staff members have left lingering questions.
