The San Francisco 49ers’ injury-riddled season continues as head coach Mike Shanahan on Friday ruled out both starting quarterback Brock Purdy and star edge-rusher Nick Bosa for Sunday’s road matchup against the Green Bay Packers.
Backup Brandon Allen was elected to start over Josh Dobbs (who was signed in the offseason as the presumed understudy to Purdy). The former 2016 sixth-round pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars has started nine career games with both the Denver Broncos and the Cincinnati Bengals.
Allen spent last year behind both Purdy and Sam Darnold on the San Francisco depth chart, failing to see a snap. Speaking to Mirror US Sports at the Super Bowl, he amitted his role is “a weird position, for sure. But I prepare the same like I have all year long, every week.”

Purdy and the 49ers tumbled to a 5-5 record with a disappointing 20-17 home loss last weekend to the Seahawks. Shanahan told the media on Friday he suffered a right shoulder injury in the contest.
“I don’t want to say there is long-term concern,” he admitted. “We got the MRI on Monday, we really just thought he needed some rest.”
“We really weren’t concerned about him not being good this week, but when he started up Thursday, it surprised him, it surprised us how [his shoulder] felt. So, we had to shut him down.”

“I really don’t know what to think of it,” Shanahan continued. “The MRI doesn’t look like that, so it should be all right. But, the way it responded, it really is up in the air for next week. We’ll have to see on Monday.”
On the year, Purdy is completing 66 percent of his passes for 2,613 yards with a 13-8 touchdown-interception ratio. The former seventh-round pick is up for an extension after this season.
Bosa will miss Sunday’s game with what the team is calling a hip/oblique injury. When speaking with the press on Wednesday, the edge-rusher said “It gets better every day. Definitely a little early to call it either way.”
The former second-overall pick has seven sacks through the team’s first 10 games. He won’t be the only big name missing on the 49ers’ defense: both linebacker Dre Greenlaw and cornerback Charvarius Ward will also miss out.
San Francisco’s streak of entering 36 straight games as the betting favorite will likely come to an end on Sunday.
