Thomas Tuchel is reportedly set to become the new England manager with an announcement expected in the coming days and a salary rivaling USMNT boss Mauricio Pochettino.

The German is said to be in talks with the Football Association about replacing interim manager Lee Carsley, who took temporary charge after Gareth Southgate left the role after leading the Three Lions to the Euro 2024 final.

Tuchel emerged as the front-runner for the job on Tuesday after leaving his job as Bayern Munich manager at the end of last season. The former Chelsea Champions League-winning boss is set to become England’s only third foreign manager, after the late-Sven Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

England’s under-21 manager Carsley took the reins on an interim basis but after defeat against Greece and victory over Finland in the Nations League last week, he stated his intentions not to take the job permanently. The FA moved fast to secure Tuchel and reportedly will be paying the 51-year-old a handsome sum.

According to GIVEMESPORT sources, Tuchel isn’t pursuing a salary much higher than Southgate’s previous terms, reportedly wanting to earn slightly over £100,000-per-week ($130,685), amounting to £5.2million ($6.8m) per year. If Tuchel was to pen a contract with England for wages at such value, the German would take home more than Pochettino.

According to ESPN, Pochettino will receive $6m-per-year in his two-year contract to manage the United States through their home 2026 World Cup. The Argentine’s deal with The Stars and Stripes is a massive increase from previous boss Gregg Berhalter and United States women’s boss Emma Hayes, who signed a deal matching the former men’s boss at $1.6m-per-year.

Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino’s salary with the USMNT would be eclipsed by Tuchel

Taking the England job would represent Tuchel’s first step in international management having previously coached Mainz and Borussia Dortmund in Germany – winning the DFB-Pokal with the latter in 2017. He later joined PSG in 2018, remaining there for two seasons where he lifted the French title twice and the Coupe de France.

Tuchel’s biggest accomplishment in management to date came in 2021 when he led Chelsea to Champions League glory, beating Manchester City 1-0 in the final in Portugal. However, after a reported falling out with Blues owner Todd Boehly, just over a year later.

A return to his homeland followed, joining Bayern Munich in March 2023 and winning the Bundesliga title just months later. Tuchel bought England’s all-time record goalscorer Harry Kane to the club that summer but was dismissed from his job at the end of the season after Bayern ended the campaign trophyless for the first time since 2011/12.

If appointed, Tuchel’s first game would be against Greece in November, a game the Three Lions would need to win to leapfrog the Euro 2004 winners to reach the top of their Nations League group, chasing promotion to League A in the tournament’s structure, the top section of the format. His first home game would be against the Republic of Ireland at Wembley three days later.
